`Davison can be a national champ'

Gavin Davison was the only host club member to reach a final in the Heaton Junior Open last week.

He was beaten 6-2, 6-3 by Middlesex's Oliver Golding in the boys' 12 & under decider, but although Davison's coach Matthew McTurk might not have been happy with his performance, he feels there is massive potential.

"Gavin has it in him to be a national champion," said Heaton's club professional.

"I haven't seen him much since I came here five months ago because he has had a shoulder injury, but he is very talented and has good hand-eye co-ordination.

"His forehand and backhand are sound, but his serve and his volleys need some work, as does his mental approach."

It was this last factor which let Davison down in the Heaton final.

McTurk said: "Although he played okay, mentally Gavin was just not there for this match.

"He went 3-0 down outdoors and, although I had a pep talk with him before he continued indoors, things only got slightly better."

McTurk added: "It was an ugly match with both players shouting, although Gavin's opponent was much the worse.

"He was throwing his racquet and almost hit a parent on one occasion."
