Resurfacing work will delay drivers

Motorists can expect further upheaval at the busy Saltaire roundabout when resurfacing work takes place next week.

The Highways Agency has promised to minimise disruption by carrying out the work at night. But the work, which will also take place at Bingley's Crossflatts roundabout and Hard Ings Road in Keighley, along the A650, will cause delay.

A traffic light control system will be in operation at all approaches to the roundabouts and in Hard Ings Road.

The work will take place on Wednesday, November 24, at Saltaire roundabout, Thursday, November 25, at the Crossflatts roundabout and from Friday, November 26, until Tuesday, November 30, at Hard Ings Road, between 8pm and 6am.

Drivers using the A650 have been advised to allow a little extra time for their journey while the £150,000 resurfacing works are carried out.

The resurfacing will improve the safety of the road with a new skid resistant surface and reduced road noise.

Highways Agency project manager David Phillips said: "This resurfacing work will improve the safety of the road, especially during winter when the roads can become slippery in damp weather. We are resurfacing the roundabouts as they are areas where cars tend to brake a lot more frequently, therefore a skid-resistant surface is particularly important."

Surveys have shown that since the Bingley relief road opened more than 2,000 extra vehicles are coming through Saltaire roundabout every day.

Councillor Martin Love (Shipley, Green) said: "I would rather they did the work at night and I am relieved they are not diverting the traffic down the back streets. If it's got to be done, it's got to be done."

He said action was needed, though, over the amount of traffic using the roundabout and people continuing to use side streets to avoid delays.
